15’s squeeze past plucky Cavan Town

Carrick Rovers 2-1 Cavan Town

Rovers 15's side seen off the Cavan Town in a gritty entertaining league game. The game played on a pitch which was tough to keep your feet on didn't deter both sides from trying to get the ball down and play. Rovers opened up brightly and created a number of early chances with Dylan being denied by two great last ditch tackles. As the game settled, Rovers created a few opportunities with Michal and Lorcan just not getting on the end of decent deliveries. At the other end Thomas in goal had to be off his line quickly to deny the in-rushing Cavan attack.

The defence was slightly reshuffled with a number of players missing through injury, illness and representative football. This did not seem to upset Rovers early doors with both fullbacks offering great width. As the game wore on towards half time Rovers Introduced Jerome and got a near instant reward. The ball was worked through Sean and Lorcan who found Dylan with a great ball, Dylan worked himself into the box and he rolled the ball across to Jerome to finish to an empty net. Gary in the Cavan net was the busier of the two keepers but there was little to separate both teams with Rovers having the slenderest of leads at half-time.
The second started with Cavan finding an instant equaliser. The ball was played out to their wide player who squeezed in a cross under pressure from Cathal. The cross eluded everyone and found its way into the far top corner for an unlikely goal. For the next twenty minutes both sides battled the conditions as much as each other. Rovers grabbed their second some 15 minutes into the second half. A good move started on the left side of the pitch involving Jerome, Cathal and Jack, seen Daniel swing over an enticing ball. Gary in the Cavan goal made a tremendous save to deny Dylan, but the ball spun between Lorcan and a few Cavan defenders. With a number of players swiping at the ball it somehow squirmed over the line with Lorcan claiming the final touch. Rovers for the next 10 minutes dominated possession and but for some great defending from Cavan Rovers would have extended their advantage. Then Cavan got their tails up and created 3 tremendous chances, all one on one with the keeper. In goal, Thomas stood big and tall and somehow kept Rovers precious lead intact. Cavan sensing an equaliser piled on the pressure and Rovers were now content to hit Cavan on the counter. When the final whistle went Rovers were relieved to have held on for a gritty hard victory. Next week it's the same opponents away in the cup.
