11's win Cup Final thriller

Cootehill 2-3 Carrick Rovers
CMUL 11 Cup Final

Carrick Rovers travelled to Cootehill on Sunday 23rd March for the cup final against Cootehill. Condition's were perfect for the cup final and everybody present was in for a very entertaining and exciting match. Cootehill were probably slight favourite's having defeated Rovers at the same venue earlier in the season and Rovers were without the injured Luke in goal. Carrick kicked off and went on the attack with Zach, who was denied by good defending by Cootehill. Rovers settled well and looked the better side early on. Their closing down, passing, and movement were causing problems for the Cootehill defence. However Cootehill were looking dangerous on the break, and the Rovers were finding it hard to get the early goal that they were chasing.

Midway through the half the opening goal of the match came, but it was against the run of play and Cootehill were in front. Rovers had numerous chances to clear the danger before the ball fell to a Cootehill player who made no mistake from close range. Rovers kicked off and went in search of an equaliser straight away. They quickly settled into their game again and Cootehill were struggling to cope with Flynn and Oran up front, while Cormac, Nathan and Zach were winning the midfield battle. They didn't have to wait long until they got their reward when Flynn picked up the ball 20 yards from goal, went past 2 defenders and finished well to the keepers right. Nathan almost put the Rovers ahead with an excellent long range free-kick from a central position. With time almost up in the first-half Oran won possession on the wing, passed to Nathan who put in a great cross and Zach was at the back post to finish well to put the Rovers 2-1 up at the break.

Half-time: Cootehill 1-2 Carrick Rovers

Rovers started the second half as they finished the first and were looking for a third. 5 minutes into the half Rovers worked the ball out from the back with Dylan passing to Conor who found Cormac who found Nathan who burst down the wing to put in another great cross which Flynn met at the front post to finish well. Cootehill were rocked and went in search of a goal to get them back in the match. However Dylan was having a good game between the posts, while Keith, Conor and Andrew were looking solid at the back and they all made numerous interceptions as Cootehill started to push forward. Rovers were tiring and Conor was brought on. Rovers were defending in numbers and Cootehill could not find a way through. With 6 minutes left on the clock, Cootehill got a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty, which was well taken, it was 3-2 and everybody was in for an exciting finish. Pavel and Cathal were brought on as Cootehill were pushing hard and were gaining momentum. Rovers had a chance to seal it but it was cleared off the line. Cootehill worked the ball down the pitch and won a corner. The Cootehill player whipped in a great corner which clipped the bar and the Rovers were lucky to escape. With Mark and Niall ready to enter the game the Rovers were relieved to hear the final whistle. Flynn was presented with the cup and there was great jubilation among their loyal supporters. Rovers are the CMUL cup champions and will be hoping they can add the league title next weekend which would cap a great season, for a very dedicated group of lads.

This was an excellent game of football played between 2 evenly matched teams and both deserve great credit for a very entertaining cup final.
