16's back in winning form

Bohermeen 1-3 Carrick Rovers
16 John Harte Cup

Carrick Rovers 16’s met Bohermeen in the Cup First Round in Navan. We are having a difficult season and were keen to get back on track. Carrick opened well and attacked Bohermeen with some nice one touch passes to make a few good advances towards goal.

Bohermeen were quick on the counterattack and liked to send in long balls over our defence to their pacy forwards, one attack had their forward bearing down on the Carrick goals only for Conor Duffy to catch up with him and stop him with a sound sliding tackle.

Gavin in goals, has become a reliable goalie and he is clever in getting kick outs to the best option. Bohermeen had a very strong midfielder who was sending some clever through balls to rattle or defence, this paid off with them getting the opening goal in the 9th minute.

This was a shock and Carrick needed to get recomposed and get back into the game.

Liam Mc Geough sent a long pass to Michael Monaghan who sent it wide to Kevin Lambe and fed a through ball to Mark Grimes who battled past defenders along the end line and rattled the Bohermeen net, this was the immediate reaction Carrick needed and it got them back into the game.

Bohermeen came at us and were clever in moving the ball into the Carrick half and were a constant threat. Andrew Culleton was holding his zone well as this was their preferred route.

Matthew Connolly was composed in sending balls out to Michael Monghan who was playing well in his new midfield role, his handling of their strong midfielder proved vital on many occasions.

Sean Russell was playing some very skillful pacy football as corner forward and was getting some good shots on goal.

Carrick got a corner in the 13th minute, Jack Kieran sent in a perfectly measured cross to meet the head of Conor Duffy who just sent it over.

Carrick were in good form and it was good to see the true ability of all the players coming through, it was a tonic they badly needed.

Sean Russell and Mark Grimes were having a stormer of a partnership up front and were giving some dazzling displays of skillful attacks.

Jack Kieran was very mobile and getting some nice shots on goals, the Bohermeen goalie was skillful and was saving his team.

Cormac Boylan on right mid was sending some nice through balls to the forwards and was quick to get back to defend.

Sean Russell ran at Bohermeen and duped two defenders to lay a ball into the path of Mark Grimes, Mark sent a rasper in but was parried out to a waiting Kevin Lambe who just sent it over.

Carrick got a free 20 yds out and Jack Kieran was dispatched to take it, this is where he excels, his shot was saved by this tenacious goalie, Cormac Boylan hit the rebound but was also saved. Carrick just couldn’t get their next goal.

Second half opened with Sean Russell breaking through and having a good shot saved. Kevin Lambe got a long pass from the back and he ran down his wing and got the second elusive goal.

Minutes later, Kevin sent a ball down the wing to Mark Grimes who turned two defenders and was through to the goals when he was taken down, looked like a penalty but we got free instead from the edge of the box, Michael Monaghan took the free and the Bohermeen goalie reacted quickly to save it.

Carrick were attacking well but were not getting goals. Carrick got a corner and Conor Duffy headed it high into the net, it was disallowed due to a infringement by Carrick on a Bohermeen defender, still don’t know who did it ??.

Conor Duffy sent a long pass to Kevin Lambe who sent a through ball to Mark Grimes who ran on goal and sent it home.

Carrick made some changes to the team as it was a fast game and fresh legs were needed.

Bohermeen still came at us and it was still a lead to defend as they weren’t giving up.

Good to see the 16’s back winning and we will build on this for rest of season.
