Carrick Rovers AFC were only too happy to take up the invitation from the local Lion's Club of Ireland, to enter a team into the Lion's Club U/15's National Soccer Competition. We were drawn against our neighbours from County Cavan, Cavan Town, which was an amalagmated team made up of Cavan Celtic and Cavan Shamrock players. The game was played last Thursday evening on the new Astropark pitch in Cavan Town. The local side got out of the blocks straight away and were 3-0 up after 10 minutes, with some brillant attacking play that Rovers had no answer to. Rovers to their credit got stuck in and came more into the game after the initial shocking start. They managed to press the ball more and forced the Cavan side to play deeper in their own half. The score remained the same until just before half-time when Cavan increased their lead with a well worked goal. The Cavan team were now rampant and ran 4 more goals in the 2nd half , while Rovers got a goal back through Ryan O'Connor. These Cavan lads played some brillant, flowing football at times and it will take a decent side to knock them out of this competition. We wish them the best of luck in the next round and will be monitoring their progress carefully. To the Lion's Cub of Carrickmacross, we are very disappointed not to progress further, but hope to do better next year and we express our happiness to continue the links between themselves and Cariick Rovers AFC.
