Carrick had a great victory in the Community Games final in Gortakeegan on Tuesday evening last. It was a raw evening but a sweet result. The managers Fintan Swinburne and Mark Mc Nulty have nurtured this squad and it is now off to the Ulster Finals!
It is especially gratifying for Fintan because 30 years years ago he missed out by being a few days overage. There was Community Games soccer some years before but since 1982 we have taken part continuously. The present squad played some smart football and scored 6 goals in the process, in 1982 we were beaten 1 nil in the final and to get any practice matches we had to go to Dundalk. But we gave a good account of ourselves. The panel that year was, and I’m relying on memory, Anthony and Alan O'Reilly, Martin and Phelim Mc Mahon, Sean and Brian Farrell, Jeremy Ross, Aiden Slevin, Martin Cashell, Barry Mc Phillips, Nigel Walsh and Gareth Mc Donnell. We didn’t win the next year, a controversial goal! Did the whole of the ball cross the line? But we won the next year and represented the county for the 5 following years.
Well done again and thanks to all the families who were there to support.
