MDL C Reserve V Donacarney

Carrick Rovers 4-3 Donacarney

Carrick closed in on the top of the MDL C Reserve with a superb win over the league leaders Donacarney. It was a goal fest with both teams trying to play football in an exciting game. Donacarney got out of the blocks the quickest and should have been two ahead after 5 minutes only for Joey Farrell in the Carrick goal and also the post saving Carrick. Carrick finally got into gear after this and both teams traded blows. The first goal came on twenty minutes from some great work by Graham Scotson on the left wing who squared the ball across the goal for Simon Ward, who smacked it home from ten yards. Donacarney were back on level terms about a minute after they tipped off, when their centre half picked out the centre forward with a pinpoint pass and he hit it first time, Joey Farrell managed to get a hand on it but could not keep it out. The game was end to end with each side going close to doubling their score. In the 30th minute Darren McGlone broke up a Donacarney move in the middle of the pitch, the ball went to Gary Marron who slid a pass into Simon Ward who then blasted the ball across the keeper to get his second goal. Carrick got their third goal about two minutes later when Darren and Gary combined again but this time released the ball to Sean O'Rourke who hammered the ball across the keeper into the far corner of the net. Donacarney were not going to lie down, they fought back and just before half time they got their second goal from a brillant freekick from their no 14 after their no 9 was taken down just outside the box.

The second half was more of the same with both sides going for the win. Jason O'Rourke was getting more into the game and his runs down the right wing were causing all sorts of problems for the Donacarney leftback. Carrick had missed a number of chances to increase their lead and the one goal lead looked like it may not be enough with Donacarney twice breaking through the offside trap only to be denied by Joey Farrell in goal. With 75 minutes gone Donacarney were level again when the no 14 calmly converted a penatly for his hat-trick after their no 9 was taken down by Paul Johnston just inside the box. Carrick kicked off again and Jason O'Rourke broke down the right wing and whipped in a cross which was met at the back post by Declan Finnegan which was cleared off the line, Padraig Rafferty reacted first but his shot was cleared by the keeper. The ball broke to Darren McGlone who passed to Graham Scotson just outside the eighteen yard line, Graham pick his spot and coolly curled the ball through the maze of players to put Carrick back into the lead. Donacarney were not going to give up that easy and their no 10 went on two runs and got one-on-one both times with keeper Joey Farrell who pulled off two great saves and made sure of the three point for Carrick.
