Rovers go down to Cootehill on final day of season

Carrick Rovers 2-4 Cootehill
MCSL Div 1
On Sunday last at a sun drenched Birdy Development Park, Rovers played their final game of the season against mid table Cootehill Harps.
In what was a nothing game regarding the result, manager Rory McEneaney wanted to finish the season on a positive note after what was a tough maiden voyage for this side. With Rovers not fieldng the same 11 for any game this season, it's hard to find consistency and form and Rovers final league position and results reflected this.
Rovers did manage to keep a clean sheet for the first half but they survived a few scares and some goal line clearances from John Mc Cabe and Rory G. At half time it was very positive for Rovers but they lost Rory G through injury which meant reshuffling the pack to cater for the substitution.
Rovers went ahead 10 minutes into the second half when Mc Eneaney played Declan Finnegan down the left, he created great space and whipped in an excellent cross for Adrian 'Ronaldo' Holland to fire in at the near post.  Ronaldos celebrations excited the small crowd and 5 minutes later he found himself tapping in from close range after a rebounded shot from Maciej.  Ronnie as he is fondly known thought Christmas and his Birthday came at once as he has been starved of a goal or two of late. This spurrred on Cootehill and what should have been a more comfortable final half hour for Rovers turned very nervy when the visitors deservedly pulled a goal back. Carrick got one or two half chances but they looked tired and when a corner was deflected into their own net courtsey of Ciaran McGlynn, it looked ominous as to what way this game was going to go. It was tough on Tayto as he was having a decent game at centre half. Rovers were reduced to ten with 10 left when Banger saw red for his second booking of the afternoon. Carrick were now struggling as substitute Fox got injured which meant Rovers were now playing with 9 fit(ish) players!
Cootehill took the lead when McEneaney's clearance fell to one of the Cootehill midfielders 30 yards out, his shot came of keeper McEnaney's leg to find the net.  This was now curtans for Rovers as heads started to drop and with a few of the 'experienced heads' trying to push the younger lads on it just wasn't to be when with 2 mins left the Cootehill centre forward capatilised on sloppy defending to tap in for the final goal of the day.
So what started very positively finished very negatively for the fourth side and as it happened time and again throughout the season, when they let in a goal they seem to give up.  But on a positive note, this side was put together to offer lads football that through one reason or another would not get a game otherwise and so the club gave game time to up on 8/9 lads that would otherwise have found themselves paying registration fees and getting very little or no football so on that note it was a good clun decision.
So well done lads on finishing out a testing season and thank you to all the lads that made themselves available so the team could compete every Sunday!!
