Carrick Rovers opened well with some fine long balls to the forwards who were under severe pressure by a very strong Trim back four. Trim attacked strongly in the opening 10 minutes of the game and scored some heartbreaking goals.
Dylan Steele did his best in goals but Trim were very quick and dangerous in attack. Carrick were under pressure to respond and they did with some fine through balls from Paul Beagan and Shane Garland to David Garland. Carrick had sporadic moments of good defence and attacks. Mark Grimes sent in a cross from a corner to a quick moving Shane Garland who delivered a lovely volley into the Trim goals just to have it saved. Aaron Kent has settled well into his new role as central defender and saved us on numerous occasions. Paul Beagan was moved back into his old position and challenged well. Liam Mc Geough and Oisin Marron played strongly to counter the incessant Trim attacks. Mark Grimes always a reliable dead ball expert sent in a lovely cross from a corner on the 18th minute to the head of Aaron Kent and the Trim goalie stretched to put it over. Aaron Wilcox battled hard at midfield and Kevin Lambe was at his usual clever runs up the wing.
Second Half: Carrick needed to respond to this Trim onslaught and they did so in the second half. On the 36th minute Kevin Lambe put a clever low ball in to David Garland who battled through and claimed a confidence boosting goal. Carrick were beginning to apply some pressure. Carrick had a few corners and Kevin Lambe and Aaron Kent were getting some good headers on goal. Caolan Cassidy was winning some difficult balls and sending in some nice crosses. On the 49th minute Kevin Lambe broke through midfield and passed to Davy Garland who cleverly passed it back to Shane Garland who rattled the cross bar with a 20 yard shot. Carrick pride was being restored and confidence was rising. Mark Grimes from a free sent in a high curling ball just outside the Trim square and Aaron Kent rose while challenged to score a beauty of a goal to have it disallowed for offside.
Carrick battled well to the final whistle and while the score line was disappointing and really not a true reflection of the game, they never gave up and showed true grit where other teams would have lay down.
