Kentstown 1-2 Carrick Rovers
Carrick Rovers U14 Division 1 team came away from Kentstown on Saturday last with their foot firmly in the semi final of the HSE NECSL Cup after a hard earned win with a late goal in the dying minutes of the game.
Carrick started the quickest and had Kentstown on the back foot with a variety of attacks down the wings and over the top, Kentstown could not cope with the Rovers passing game and with a quarter of an hour gone Saul Carolan lobbed the ball over the Kentstown keeper to put them 1 up after some delightful work from Paudi Kirk to find Saul in space. For the remainder of the half Rovers duo of Corrie Sullivan and James Lambe countined to get in behind the Kentstown defence and went close on a number of occasions to doubling the lead only for the Kentstown keeper to pull off three super saves.
In the second half Kentstown made three changes and started to gain control of the match, ten minutes in and the game was level when Kentstown No 9 turned Fergal Lonergan and hammered home from twenty yards. Kentstown were buzzing and they piled on the pressure. Central defenders Fergal Lonergan and Paul Mc Ardle kept their cool and broke up all of the Kentstown attacks with the help of Ferdia Holland and James Lambe. With ten minutes to go Rovers made a change, Oisin Mc Donnell went up front and Saul Carolan dropped back into midfield. This proved to be the turning point of the match. Saul and Paudi started to win the midfield battle and with just injury time remaining Saul put through Oisin who lobbed the ball over the on rushing keeper and finished off the move by heading it into the net just in front of the Kentstown No 4 who was trying to clear his line.
